What is a Christian?

3/1/2020

We talked about the term “Christian”. What is a Christian?  What does being a Christian mean? Those who usually go to church? Those who believe in Jesus? That is partly right. It is not enough to explain. According to Acts chapter 11 verse 26, the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. That’s the origin of the term we use now. Why were they first called Christians? It’s because they were different. First, Christians are those who do not discriminate against people. Before then, disciples had only shared the gospel with the Jews. That meant there was discrimination in sharing the gospel, which didn’t make sense. Jesus did not want that.
So, according to Acts 11:20, it seemed they overcame their discrimination and opened up to those who were not Jews. In this way, Christians overcame their discrimination in sharing the gospel because Jesus didn’t discriminate.  Second, Christians are those who want to learn and grow. The early Christians not only joined worship services but also joined the disciples’ programs such as Bible study. So, as a Christian, as a disciple, training is required. Third, Christians do good and serve others as their neighbors. B
ecause Jews were colonized under the rule of the Roman Empire, It’s likely that Christians would have been far from rich. In spite of their miserable situations, however, they were willing to help those who were suffering from a severe famine. They obeyed what Jesus said: “Love your God and love your neighbors.” It is very hard to put into practice what you know. But, the early Christians did what they knew to be the right thing. They believed that doing good and serving people were required as followers of Jesus. So, please remember these things, and try to be a real Christian.
