The purpose of speaking in tongues

9/8/2019

Acts 2:1-13
W
hat happened to the followers of Jesus Christ after they were filled with the Holy Spirit? They began to speak in other tongues. That was the first miracle to occur without Jesus Christ. It has two important meanings. First, God allowed the disciples to speak other languages because the miracles were for evangelism. It was just for spreading the Gospel.  There were a lot of people who spoke different languages at that time in Jerusalem at the feast of Pentecost. So, that was a great chance to spread the gospel to them. In order to attract people’s attention and teach the gospel in their language, God made them speak in tongues. Second, it represents how God loves all people and wants to recover the identity of the people of God. In Genesis chapter 11, there is a story of the Tower of Babel. Because of this event, God confused the languages so humans couldn’t communicate with each other and scattered them. Through the Holy Spirit, God showed that he wants to recover his people and how much he loves them.
We call ourselves “people of God.” Are you a person of God? Or do you want to be a person of God? If you do, you should accept the Holy Spirit in your heart. Don’t be afraid. In order to live in this world as people of God, we have to believe in the Holy Spirit who is with us. We must receive the Holy Spirit in our hearts. That’s the way to be disciples of Jesus nowadays.
