The Meaning of The Cross

7/28/2019

Mark 15 : 16 - 39

Today we are gonna talk about the passion of Jesus Christ. The story is the most important story in the Bible. We know the story that the soldiers put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. They began to call out to him,” King of the Jews”, and they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. And they brought Jesus to Golgotha, which means the place of the skull, and they crucified Him on the cross for at least 6 hours. And finally, he died. People think that death means the end of everything in the world. Even though we, Christians, believe that we are going to heaven when we die, the meaning of death is the end or failure. So, people who saw Jesus Christ crucified on the cross thought that he failed. He could not continue his ministry on the earth. He could not teach and heal people anymore. To the people who saw the death of Jesus Christ, it means he failed, so his teaching and ministry was nothing. Right? However, once Jesus died on the cross, what did the centurion who stood there in front of Jesus say? “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

the centurion has been with Jesus Christ not only the passion of Christ in which Jesus was the weakest but also a ministry of Jesus in which Jesus was the most powerful. Finally, he saw the death of Jesus and he saw to be torn to the curtain of the temple. it means Jesus Christ came for all people to forgive our sin to the earth. The centurion realized why Jesus died on the cross powerlessly, even though he has enough power to break the cross. That’s how he loves us. So, he had no choice but to say that “Surely this man was the Son of God!” that’s the reason why Jesus died for us. I wanna conclude today’s sermon by this word, John 3:16.  'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
